Country Restaurant with Rooms

IN THE HEART OF KENT’S ALKHAM VALLEY

SITUATED BETWEEN DOVER AND FOLKESTONE

Kent Country Restaurant with Rooms

Nestled in the heart of Kent’s picturesque Alkham Valley, The Marquis is a converted 200-year-old village restaurant with lots of charm and character. Offering a wide selection of beers and wines, as well as high-quality food in the restaurant, our traditional Kentish establishment is the ideal location for a relaxed and enjoyable meal or a leisurely drink.

Our restaurant

Inspired by the local landscapes and produce, the Marquis’ menu is all about the simplicity of great flavours. Whether it’s vegetables grown on nearby farms or the catch of the day landed by Dover fishing boats, we source as much as possible within the area. For that reason, we’re considered among the finest restaurants in Folkestone and Dover.

Our rooms

Overnight rooms are also available, so if you’re celebrating a special occasion or need to put guests up nearby, we can accommodate you. Each of our ten bedrooms has its own individual style, and we make every effort to make our guests feel at home. Each room offers exceptional comfort, being furnished with a king size bed, a contemporary bathroom and a television, and WiFi is free to all guests.

How to get here

As one of the best established country restaurant with rooms, the Marquis is within easy reach of many local transport links, including the M20 motorway, the Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel), and Dover’s ferry port and cruise terminal. Whether you’re heading to the Alkham Valley for the day or passing through on your way to or from the Continent, you can be sure of a warm welcome, a hearty meal and a cosy room.

Romantic retreat

Our daughter paid for a three course lunch at the Marquis which was extremely enjoyable. The venue is very clean, modern and well appointed. The lunch menu had a good variety of starters, main course and desserts. We didn’t have to wait too long for our food and it was very well presented and perfectly cooked. I would highly recommend this venue and would definitely use in the future.

Lovely place

We stayed here for 1 night and although not cheap it was a nice place to visit after a long day. The staff were excellent but the hotel seemed to lack some personality.
There was a dressing table and chair in our room that had a TV on the wall above. This meant you had to balance on the sofa arm to dry your hair using the mirror, not ideal. There are no complimentary shampoo or conditioners but you can have fresh milk and cold water sent to your room for no extra charge.
It was definitely fine dining so don't expect large portions but it is all about the experience!
The bed was very comfortable and the towels great quality.

Lovely stay

We stayed at The Marquis on a Saturday night.
The room was tastefully decorated and really clean. The bed was really comfy and the underfloor heating meant the room was very cosy.

Breakfast was included and tasty - all the staff were friendly and helpful.
A nice overnight stay on a sunny weekend.

Quiet

The hotel was very quiet on a Sunday night. All the staff we met during our stay were both friendly and helpful. All credit to them. The room was a little smaller than expected with no room for a comfy chair. Room was very clean and the bathroom fine. Breakfast, cooked to order was very good.

We caused the Marquis problems but they still came up trumps

This is an individual hotel in the depth of the countryside but is is next to a busy road in which We had a table booked for six people for Saturday lunch, two of our party came over an hour late, half an hour after the kitchen was expecting to close.
The Marquis at Alkham gave us a great lunch even though we put them under pressure.
Sometimes the measure of a good establishment is the service when something goes wrong, not when it all goes to plan. We cannot recommend them highly enough.
